What is Stenography?

Stenography is from Greek words meaning “narrow writing.” The purpose of shorthand is to be able to write approximately as fast as someone speaks, in order to take down everything that is said.

What is shorthand scope?

In India if one knows Shorthand at 80/100wpm, then one can apply for Stenographer in many Government Departments, viz., Staff Selection Commission which conducts all vacancies of Ministries and there subordinate Departments. Parliament of India (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) for Reporter (Class I Officer) and Stenographer.

In courts and law firms especially, they are in demand. The courts have judgements running into hundreds of pages and stenographers are sought after. Also, there is good career progression. People who started as stenographers have retired as deputy secretary in various government departments.

What is the future of stenographer?

There are employment opportunities for stenographers in many government institutions, especially in courtrooms. The selection for government positions is usually conducted through examinations organized by the SSC (Staff Selection Commission), UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) and some public banking institutions.
